Techniques de construction traditionnelles et techniques romaines dans le théâtre d’Althiburos et les monuments de spectacle de l’Afrique Proconsulai…
2023
The contribution aims to study the relationship between the traditional construction techniques of the territories of Proconsular Africa and those imported by the Romans and used in the construction of entertainment buildings, in particular theaters and amphitheatres, also taking into account the importation of typological models, starting from the “case study” of the theater of Althiburos. During the 1st and 2nd centuries AD there is a gradual introduction of Roman construction techniques, such as the opus caemaenticium, especially in the construction of substructures and vaults, sometimes with the importation of urban models, of techniques but also of Italic workers (just think of the opu…
Millstone coastal quarries of the Mediterranean: A new class of sea level indicator
2014
The coasts of Italy still preserve several remnants of coastal quarries built in antiquity, that now provide insights into the intervening sea-level changes occurred during the last millennia. In this paper, we show and discuss a new class of sea level indicator consisting of millstones carved along the rocky coast of southern Italy since 2500 BP, that are currently submerged. They were extracted from beachrocks, sandstones or similar sedimentary rocks, easier for carving by ancient carving tools. Our study focuses on 10 coastal sites located at Capo d'Orlando, Avola, and Letojanni, in Sicily; Soverato, Tropea, and Capo dell'Armi, in Calabria; Castellabate, Palinuro, and Scario, in Campania…

Mines and quarries production: A driver analysis of withdrawals in Italy
2020
Abstract The growing demand for non-energy mineral resources has determined relevant withdrawals as well as import-export flows. This paper aims to disentangle the drivers of raw non-energy mineral resources extraction in Italy. Using a new dataset of raw resources extracted from mines and quarries in the 21 Italian regions (19 regions and 2 autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano) for the period 2013–2016, our empirical analysis confirms the relevance of mining and quarrying producer price index as well as the manufacturing and construction sectors as main drivers. In line with the Hotelling (1931)'s theory, a positive relationship between m&q mineral resources extraction intensity and …
Roman quarries of the Iberian Peninsula: "Anasol" and "Anasol-type".
2007
The Iberian peninsula is rich in marble, both white and coloured, of excellent quality, used in the past (Pliny NH, XXXVI, II) and also at the present time as material for building and decoration. Many types of these marbles are similar to some, better known, Greek, Italian, Egyptian and Asian marbles. During the Roman Empire “ marmor carystium ” was extensively used. Taking into account the great similarity of this marble with the “ anasol ” and “ anasol ”-types mined in Spain and Portugal, this work presents a minero-petrographic, chemical and geochemical characterisation of these lithotypes, aiming at finding parameters to distinguish them from the better-known Greek and Italian “ cipoll…
MILLSTONES COASTAL QUARRIES AS INDICATOR OF RELATIVE SEA LEVEL CHANGES
2012
The Italian coasts shows numerous archaeological remains which reveals the activities that were carried out along the coast for thousands of years of history. In order to use archaeological structures for coastal studies, an accurate estimate of their relationship to the sea level at the time of construction is required (Lambeck et al 2004, Antonioli et al 2007, Auriemma & Solinas 2009). Millstone coastal quarries are only documented in southern Italy; they are carved on beachrock, calcarenites and other sedimentary rock easy to be exploited. Few archaeological information have been published about quarries for millstones extraction; they are documented since around 2500 yr BP (Amouretti, 1…
Re-build landscape. Design for the reuse of abandoned quarries
2021
Looking at the history of our geological and mining heritage, we can see the evolution of the role played by underground mining sites over the centuries. However, if the activity of quarrying stones is as old as the presence of humans on earth, the issue of the territorial regeneration, based on the recovery and re-functionalization of abandoned quarries, is one of the central arguments of the contemporary debate. The extractive activity that on one hand constitutes an important economic resource for numerous territories, on the other hand requires particular attention to the environmental impact it causes. The theme is that of the so-called drosscapes, soils and residual spaces, once margi…

The safety of an industrial archaeological heritage
2013
The present paper analyses an underground and inactive quarry of calcarenite, which belong to a localised area called Cave di calcarenite in Contrada Cuccidenna that has been recognised as a typical example of industrial archaeological heritage. The study of this typical quarry is finalised to the preservation and safe fruition of this site, which represents the history of manufacturing technologies of rocky ashlars. Rock samples from the pillars have been collected and, at first, a petrographic characterisation has been performed. The strength parameters have been estimated by means of triaxial and isotropic compression tests. Through a finite element analysis, the mechanical characterizat…
